With the capacity for high quality sound and video, DVD has surpassed videotapes as the new industry standard in quality video storage. A DVD is similar to a CD (compact disc), but has 6 to 12 times the storage capacity. DVD is the first video format that will truly last a lifetime.
Advantages of DVD are:
Preservation
VHS tapes can have a lifetime of as little as 10 years as they are susceptible to atmospheric and weather conditions resulting in varying degrees of degradation. One thing is for sure though with a video tape, and that is that as each year passes the video and audio quality is diminishing and cannot be restore to its original quality. DVDs last a lifetime if treated carefully. No heads actually touch the DVD surface so your DVD never wears and can be watched repeatedly without worry. If liquids are accidentally spilt onto a DVD, then they can be simply wiped clean with a soft clean cloth. There are no moving parts to a DVD. That means there aren’t any magnetic strips that can break or crimple, or cases that get jammed in a player.
Quality
VHS offers between 200 and 300 lines of resolution. DVD offers a full 480 lines of resolution resulting in sharper, clearer images. DVD also offers full 5.1 surround sound digital audio as opposed to stereo offered by VHS tapes. This results in a more cinematic experience in your own living room.
Versatility
Fast-forwarding to a specific spot in your video degrades the tape and is a slow process. A DVD lets you skip directly to a specific point. A DVD has a fully interactive DVD Menu that lists all of your chapters. Chapters are usually a new scene or event, just like a book. With DVD, you can instantly skip between chapters at the touch of a button. You can also fast forward and rewind within each chapter, but because nothing is actually touching the DVD surface it is not wearing out.
